When an average piece of clothing at Forever 21 only costs you $20, why would you want to spend $50, $80 or even over $100 on that similar piece or even dress.
In this consumeristic American culture where clothing is a disposable consumption, why splurge on your entire wordrobe when you can budget it out better?
I’m assuming that no one really has an entire wardrobe of only Forever 21, H&M or Target pieces, but they do take up space in your closet.
In this culture (if you’re not a wardrobe hoarder), you donate or clean out your wardrobe on a regular basis and those trendy pieces get bagged and sent out of the house, am I correct?
So why would you spend more on that sweater or dress than you need to knowing that it’s not going to be spending much time in your wardrobe?
The idea of being able to buy trendy pieces for a fraction of the cost or even an imitated replica of a trend item on the catwalk became a joyous part of our shopping experience with some major help by Forever 21 and the retailers alike.
So it makes me wonder how the other mass marketers have changed their pricepoints and buying strategies to accomodate to the shifts in the industry. For an example, only a couple of years ago (before Forever 21 became super main stream), Nordstrom BP, Macy’s and even the Gap was the place to go for simple short lived pieces that you needed.
Nowadays, I feel like consumers (mostly women) opt for Forever 21 for pieces that replace the mall stores that we’ve all shopped at only 5 years ago.
I’m not saying that Forever 21 should be the ultimate shopping arena for all, but it’s a wise choice for someone that likes to be fashion forward and know that they’re only going to wear that a few times.
Other pieces that you know will last longer can be bought from qualitative brands, but it’s interesting to me to see how the availability in this day and age for trendy pieces is right at your finger tips at such an affordable, low-budget price!
It makes me wonder how all the other retailers (where we formerly shopped at) are surviving and are restrategizing their design team to buying to sales, etc.
Just a thought…

your thought is resonating in my brain. (o.O”).
I choose quality over quantity since it usually ends up in my “Goodwill crate” at the end of the season. I do own F21 | H&M pieces but they don’t seem to last long so I just wear them as nighties [PJs-ish]. haha! [* do i make sense? gawd, lol.]
Good post! F21 is the best for simple pieces, accessories and the once-in-awhile trendy items. They have definitely changed the consumer game up.
I don’t like having to buy and re-buy. That said, I don’t really do trendy pieces unless they’ve survived a season or two. I’m not “on trend”, I make trendy pieces fit into the timelessness of what I want my wardrobe to be. I do buy occasionally at H&M because I think the quality will last long enough to get my cost/wear money’s worth.

I haven’t shopped there recently, but I do own quite a bit from shops like Forever 21. They’re in my gang of wallet-friendly stores, which include Target and other online shops like Alloy or Delias. I mostly use them for basics like tights, since the price point is so low, and it’s a high-wear item.
LOL! show me some of your outfits, i wanna seee !
their accessories are ultimately the bst!
