I don’t call myself a Fashionista because I’m broke as a joke to shop, but when I was working and making a regular income to make my minor splurges, I did my shopping ALL OVER THE PLACE.
In New York (I used to live in Chelsea on 25th St) and I’d walk all the way down Broadway and 5th Ave through Union Square, NYU to ALMOST Canal Street and stop at about Prince St or that Soho area, then subway it back up to about 34th Street to hit up the huge H&M and Forever 21. That was what my Saturday afternoons looked like for about 6+ hours of walking, on my iPod and Blackberry. I’d make sure to hit up the BEST Loehmann’s on 7th Ave and Filene’s Basement on 14th St.
It was so bad how often I shopped that I can spot your clothes even though it was from H&M, Zara and Forever 21. Crazy, I KNOW.
Those were the days… I do miss it. All the sample sales … Oh How I Miss NY.
Well, my point being that those that don’t work the industry or have mega millions don’t need to shop like a rockstar like myself. The whole idea of bargain shopping and checking out low discount stores and off priced retailers is the whole fun of shopping.
In my opinion (which you are more than welcome to disagree), is that the joy of shopping all comes down to digging for great deals.
That means being able to have an eclectic wardrobe of staple items from expensive retailers to Target dresses. You’d be surprised to find dresses at Target that look like dupes from BCBG. (Trust me, I used to work at BCBG and I’ve bought Target, shhh).
Actually, scratch what I said about being mega millions. It truly doesn’t matter what your household income is. Whether you are making 25k a year (my NY CITY ENTRY LEVEL FASHION INDUSTRY PAY) or $250,000 a year, having style and being able to shop like a pro is what sets the Fashionistas apart from the civilians.
I don’t know about other people, but I can tell if your whole wardrobes from the mall. (EUW!) Look elsewhere, shop at off priced places, you’ll be surprised.
HELLO! We’re still in a recession. Shop smart!

Helllo back!
I totally agree with you!! From your post awhile back, “wardrobes should consists of the high-end and low-end”… or something like that. LOL.
My favorite stores besides Neimans or Nordstroms, is H&M, Target, Nordstrom Rack, Value Village & consignment stores – for those great vintage clothes.
good post. :D
Yes. Eclectic is good for you ;)
Amen to shopping smart. I think getting into a mindset of retail as excavation versus impulse is a good way to set one’s practice towards making decisions that balance quality with cost. I’m an online shopping fiend, so I like to go with shops that have free shipping and good return/exchange policies.
Totally! Consumers like u and I are only getting more and more savvy ;)
I love this post & it’s so true. When you’re passionate about shopping, you immediately recognize specific pieces/styles/designers on people.
Oh, and that Loehmann’s on 7th Ave is fabulous.
Thanks girlfriend!
