What Is Your Definition Of Luxury?

deluxefashionTo your surprise, I read a lot of books. Usually about 5 at a time. Ones that interest me I can get through within a week. If they’re a bit on the bore, it may take me a couple of months. Previously, I have shared my interest with the book Why We Buy and have recommended to anyone who sells or buys (which may be those that this blog is targeted towards).

I have just started reading Deluxe; How Luxury Lost Its Luster by Dana Thomas and so far it’s been thought provoking. I’d like to share a little excerpt of an early chapter…

The way we dress reflects not only our personality but also our economic, political, and social standing and our self worth. Luxury adornment has always been at the top of the pyramid, setting apart the haves from the have-nots. …The display of luxury signified one’s power and achievements and brought on both scorn and envy. …Luxury wasn’t simply a product. It denoted a history of tradition, superior quality and often a pampered buying experience. Luxury was a natural and expected element of upper-class life, like belonging to the right clubs or having the right surname.”

the Bravern Jimmy Choo Louis VuittonThat is how the term luxury may have been described or defined in early days, but it has truly lost its luster.

Would you agree with the excerpt? How has the term luxury progressed or degressed? Where is the term luxury now?

In relevance to the fact that the luxury market has made its presence here in Bellevue, where is the City of Bellevue heading in terms of having luxury goods readily available?

I agree with that excerpt from Deluxe. Back then it was all about being part of the right clubs and having the surnames. Nowadays, I believe society is accepting new surnames. Lol! Why do you always have essay topics? Ahh Rachel! I will reply later today

  6. I agree that the term luxury has been redefined from the thought behind an item to simply the pricetag. I think luxury can be in the quality or rarity of an item, but there is also the luxury of choice and knowledge behind a purchase. If something is rare or made with an exclusive skillset, it takes an intelligent buyer to hone in on this find before making the purchase and exposing this rare find to others to create a wider demand.
