David Lawrence Is Ready To Leave

October 2nd, 2009

david lawrence bellevue fashion week 2009…the Bellevue Collection because that was the message he was conveying at last night’s show. Let’s begin with the entrance. I came rushing downstairs from the Hyatt Opening a quarter before 8 because I had been notified that the show started at 8pm. I get checked in by very unorganized front desk individuals and isn’t even given any information. Nordstrom was kind enough to hand me an official hard copy of a press release with confirmation that there was a press section designated for media. As for the DL show, another press friend was told that “if there was no seating for you, you can just stand.” Wow, such courteous individuals running the show.

susan fidler david lawrence showHaving thought that we were just about to make the show, we were actually early and were able to sit front row. The show was running late so the boyfriend, DowntownBellevue and I went to get some refreshments that took a very long time. Free cocktail drinks, but $4.50 for beer, quite a first for me for that price of beer. Anyways, while in line, I ran into Susan Fidler who I met at the Bravern for an article I did for 425 Magazine (more information to come soon). You can’t miss her because her outfits are always great. Why? because she loves Zara like I do.

I didn’t get a picture of her outfit last night, but it was this beautiful jacket made out of scubadiving wear from NYC. It was great bumping into you again, Susan!

david lawrence bellevue fashion weekAfter waiting about 20 minutes in line for drinks, we head to our seats. No coordination whatsoever with ‘not stepping on the catwalk or anything.’ Everyone do whatever you want and get to your seats is what happened. The crowd looked great though. On the other hand there were empty seats in the front which should never EVER happen. All front row seats MUST be full or your show looks dead. (Especially at the corners of the catwalk….)

It started off with swimwear. Not sure why because summer had just ended, but I’m sure there was purpose to it. I wouldn’t know because I never got a program with any guidelines.

Here’s one of the videos from the bikini/speedo section of the show.

The swimwear looked very Juicy Couture which I didn’t find very fitting for the David Lawrence customer. The next segment was the all brown group with tucked in jeans in heavy brown boots, plaids, leather jackets and such.

david lawrence bellevue fashion weekSo far so good, liked the looks because it was more relevant to current season, fall. DSquared then came out with glossy, puffy jackets for both men and women. Something reminded me of Armani Exchange, but for the luxurious. I bet the Europeans loved it because I know they love glamorous clothes! ;)

Showing skin during a fashion show is great, but the tattoes must be covered. You’re taking a lot away from the clothes because it’s the clothes that are being showcased. (eek!)

The following segment was on scarves. So many models came out in jeans and a scarf. Great if you’re Abercrombie and Fitch, but not so much for David Lawrence that is reputable for having luxurious clothing.

david lawrence scarves bellevue fashion showIt would’ve been nice to know where a lot of the pieces were from because through Susan, I met designer Francisco Hernandez of Built for Man, but I couldn’t figure out what of his pieces were from his line.

The show was relatively long and the crowd seemed please with the variety of looks that can work for various customers, but right now I feel like the blind leading the blind with writing the synopsis of the show. Instead of rambling, I’ll make the rest of the story short.

Things that worked

+Music

+Visuals

+Models

+Some of the looks

Things that didn’t work

+Styling (including-shoes which didn’t go with many outfits and almost took away from the quality of DL, and the accessories)

+Many outfits weren’t well chosen for the show to really represent David Lawrence to its upmost best…

+Show coordination with everything from checking in to execution, #fail

David Lawrence bellevue fashion weekI was quite disappointed and I’ve heard that others agreed. David Lawrence is one of the most anticipated shows amongst the Bellevue Fashion Week shows. Some even stated that it was better than Nordstroms, but I beg to differ.

Through the presentation of his show it was clearly stated by the sloppiness that his mind is all ready to leave Kemper to be friends with the Bravern.

Mr. Bravern, you are lucky to have David. David Lawrence has great clothes, but I would think that if anyone of his vendors were to attend the show they would have been disappointed with the representation of their brands. If D&G or Cavalli came and saw how their clothes were styled and presented to Bellevue Fashion Week, they may have reconsidered. (That’s just my opinion).

Well David, I wish the best for you and your new home. I do hope for a better fashion show in the future and it’s just unfortunate that this Bellevue Collection Fashion Show happened to be my introduction to your brand. I do believe that it is a poor representation of you and is still optimistic with your efforts to make Bellevue more fashion forward catering to your customers that adore you and live for you.

Hope for the better future.

WOW, I think this post is longer than the Nordstrom’s post. Eek. I’m done for the day!

  1. Looking forward to seeing the new store in The Bravern, but yes, from what I’ve been seeing come out of this show, it looked a little disjointed and the choices didn’t have as much of a smooth narrative as the Nordstrom show. I of course didn’t see the DL show, so I’m only getting this from bits I’ve seen/read so far. Definitely won’t sway me from checking out the new retail space; still happy to check that out!

Are you crazy? The crowd loved this show. Front row was full when the show started. I am told that front row is reserved for their best clients ($$$$$) and the show wouldn’t start without them. Don’t go to another DL show so they can sell the seat to someone more familiar with DSquared2 or Versace.

It’s good to be honest & sincere. I, unfortunately couldn’t make it because I am sick (thanks to the cold weather). From several friends that attended, felt the same way about the show. Not as good as last year as far as I heard. As far as I’m concerned, I agree with you on the subject of tattoos, should be covered but WTF, swimwear? Haha!

I do still have respect for DL and I will always shop there as well as looking forward to seeing them @ the Bravern.

    Thanks Rachel!! Good post!

This Shoe Shopping Writer agrees with your review! I’m working on my article now, and couldn’t believe some of the shoes…or lack thereof…on the runway. Good job Rachel!

LOLOL! Some of the shoes were horrific! The barefoot doesn’t bother me so much though if thats the look that they’re going for…

Twitter, Facebook. Google Reader… I’m probably subscribed to this site in more ways than I care for! Hahaha!

  6. Just to clarify the beers were $7.50 ;)

I’m new to the whole scene, never really cared to much for clothes until I walked into the DL store a few weeks ago and fell in love with the clothes and their customer service. So I am not sure what is considered a good or bad show but I personally loved it and many of the outfits. Again I’m no expert it was my first show but I had a blast and the people around me seemed to have a good time. Loved that they used a Phoenix song :) Love that band

Thanks for reading Alex! Glad to know that DL is making a difference in the fashion world here in Bellevue/Seattle. They are great. Love what they’re doing. The show on the other hand was another story. Glad you enjoyed the show though. :)
