How important is it for someone to dress the part in their career field? If you were to go to a dermatologist with bad skin, or a hair stylist with bad touch ups would you equally respect them for being an expertise in their field?
I personally would NOT.
That is why it is so vital for someone working in the fashion industry whether it is here in Seattle or the Eastside/Bellevue to look the part. I can’t stress enough how important it is for someone partaking in the fashion industry to dress the part. Even though the fashion industry here isn’t as large as New York City or Los Angeles, you never know who you will bump into.
It shocks me when I meet someone that tells me they are a part of the style world when they don’t look put together.
Let me clarify, I’m not saying you have to dress up everyday, but having an eye for style is something that must be a part of your daily wardrobing if you work in the field. Do you disagree?
Yes, the Northwest is much more casual, but in the fashion field it is so so so important to make an example through dress because the industry is all about its aesthetic value and coordinating of wear.
It confuses me when an individual states that they work in the field when their outfit looks fragmented. If your outfit can’t be coordinated properly, how can you as an individual lead others?
Arguments such as fashion designers are the least to care for their appearance. Very true, but if you were to be put into an appropriate time and place, they will make the effort. The respectable designers are pretty much off the hook (I think) because they have proven their skillsets. Look at Catherine Malandrino or Diane Von Furstenberg. Neither women fail to look bad in public. They are always very well put together.
The fashion industry as a whole is small. You want to look appropriate. Look at this jak and jill blog for inspiration to see others in the field.
(Jak/Jill blog. the BEST blog).
If they can, so can you. Be an example to the general public.

so true!!
Personally, I believe everyone should either develop or find a sense of style and always look well put together. But that’s not a reality that will happen anytime soon.
It is very important for people in the fashion industry to have a sense of style and look the part. Personal image plays a huge role, whether you like it or not, in how people perceive you. Even if you don’t work in the fashion industry, the way you dress can still affect whether you get hired during a job interview or what people want to network with you. In the fashion industry especially, if you don’t look the part, you limit your opportunities for advancement and networking. When working in the fashion industry, its an unwritten requisite that you look the part.
If you don’t have a sense of style, find one. I used to dress like a scrub, but then I started getting really into fashion and learned what things look well together (i.e. textures, colors, etc). There are several basic things anyone can learn to improve their image. After that, its just a matter of personalizing.
