ONLY Skinny people can be fashionable?

July 15th, 2009

victoria-beckham posh beforeDoes this shock anyone? Has anyone seen this picture of fashion icon Victoria Beckham? Posh (Victoria Beckham) who was once chubby started off as a Spice Girl from the Spice World and is now looked up to by many (let me stress) young women and teens for fashion guidance. I myself, is a fan too, but I don’t fail to realize that the fact of the matter is that she can be fashion forward because she is unfortunate to have everything look so good on her.

But, why? because she lost all her baby fat? got implants? got sun kissed? bleach touch ups? and a possible tummy tuck?

I ponder to think if her message to women or young girls is that being skinny is the way to look fashionable? Or being fashionable is a way to look skinny… It may not be her message, but I think she as a public figure is an obvious and innocent misconception upon the many who believe that you can only be trendy and stylish if you were slim and that is rooted from VB being misrepresented in the magazines and the media.

Would it surprise you if I told you that Karl Lagerfeld lost weight too?

Did your jaw drop after seeing his 42kg loss cuz now you can see his fine jaw line from his previous neckless head.

Look at what he used to look like from a profile angle.

One word, “wow!”

I am still in awe of his weight loss. No one ever talks about it anymore, but I brought the horror picture back out to make a point. Let’s begin by looking at his interview with telegraph.co.uk. It statesfat karl lagerfeld that “Fashion is the best motivation for losing weight, says Karl Lagerfeld, who shed six and a half stone in just over a year.”

Karl Lagerfeld of Chanel was inspired by the Fashion Industry to lose that weight. Why? because of his desire to “suddenly want to wear clothes designed by Hedi Slimane, who used to work for Saint Laurent and now creates the Dior Homme collections. But these fashions, modelled by very, very slim boys, required me to lose at least six of my 16 stone.

I’m not sure if Karl Lagerfeld is a fashion icon for style because he is always wearing that same 3-piece suit, but as a major player in the industry he is highly respected. What do you think now that he had lost all that weight?

I’m using major fashion figures as examples of why people think that people in the fashion industry for the most part is skinny. The reality is that not everyone in the industry is fit. Look at the movie based on the Best Seller, ‘The Devil Wears Prada.’  Sample sizes are 2 and 4, Anne Hathaway’s character isn’t the model size 2 and 4, but she like any individual in the field can be easily pressured to conform to that size.

My stance is that yes, there are skinny individuals in the fashion industry that look fashionable, but that doesn’t mean that the general public must follow diet trends in order to look stylish or trendy. I’m not a skinny size 0 individual, but I know how to embrace that and make pieces work for myself.

The misconception that fashionable=skinny is false. I do agree with the fact that the reason why Victoria Beckham may be a fashion icon is due to her skinny figure being able to pull off many high fashion pieces, but that doesn’t mean that you must go and lose weight like her to wear all the couture labels.

Karl Lagerfeld wanted a healthier self and went on a major diet in order to fit into his favorite designers and look good, but this is Largerfeld talking, remember?

To those that are not in the fashion industry, it’s important to differentiate the industry from the inside and from the outside point of view. Working in the industry, there may be pressures such as that clip from the Devil Wears Prada, but in the real world be comfortable in your skin is my message to you.

Shredding a couple of pounds for a fitter you is different from losing 5 whole pants sizes from crazy dieting. Be healthy and work with what you have, just a clarification for misperceiving skinniness with fashionable-ness.
